There is beauty and conflict everywhere in the world for each of us including our own backyard. In my career I’ve been fortunate to have photographed in many parts of the world, and all throughout the United States. My current photographic series happens to be based in upstate Warwick New York, where for the past 19 years my family has called home.
The series What Once Was is about growth and change. This concept is fairly universal and might apply to most cities and small towns across America. My attempt as a resident is to give the viewer an intimate inside front row seat capturing the lifestyle, flavor, and mood of living in a small town. With a cinematic approach, my desire is to document the charm and beauty, while at the same time confronting in an honest way the growing pains facing all small towns across America today with box stores and sprawl. Our town is trying hard to control its own rapid growth and urban sprawl. Compared to most others it is in fact doing a fairly good job. But the truth is with growth and development, comes change, and that is inevitable no matter how hard you might try.
More often than not what we’re left with through the years, and what we cling to simply end up being our memories of “what once was”. Peter Liepke
