Horses of the Camargue | Lisa Cueman

“The Camargue, the vast marshland region in southern France, has always been known for its horses. Like so much of France, centuries of tradition and heritage are imbued into every facet of daily care and management of these horses. I was immediately struck by the respect afforded these horses in how they were cared for, in their breeding practices and in how they were ridden and the tack that they used. They are as much the Camargue as the Camargue is the horses and the people whose livelihoods depend on these horses have a profound understanding of this. I also sensed a romance. A romance with the land. A romance with the traditions surrounding the Camargue horse. A romance with the time honored culture of caring for them and a romance for the way of life that these horses provide. This sense of romance, along with the simplicity of the color palette, is what directed the subtle hues you see here for this body of work.” —— Lisa Cueman
